Gratuity Rules for Dubai Mainland Employees

If you work for a mainland Dubai company (i.e. not inside a free zone), your gratuity is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, the same law that applies across the entire UAE. There is no separate “Dubai formula” — your basic salary, contract type, and years of service determine your payout using the standard 21-day / 30-day calculation. For the full formula, worked examples, and the limited vs unlimited contract breakdown, see our complete UAE gratuity calculator guide.

Dubai Free Zones: Which Ones Follow the Standard Formula

Most Dubai free zones follow the same federal gratuity formula as the mainland:

  • JAFZA (Jebel Ali Free Zone) — standard federal formula applies. See our JAFZA gratuity calculator.
  • DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) — standard federal formula applies. See our DMCC gratuity calculator.
  • DDA (Dubai Design District) — standard federal formula applies. See our DDA gratuity calculator.
  • Dubai South and DAFZA — also follow the standard federal formula.

DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) is the one Dubai free zone that works differently. DIFC employees are covered under the DEWS (DIFC Employee Workplace Savings) scheme — a funded, investment-based savings plan your employer contributes to monthly, rather than a lump-sum gratuity calculated at the end of your service. If you work in DIFC, the calculator above won’t reflect your actual entitlement — check your DEWS statement instead.

Checking Your Gratuity Officially in Dubai

Alongside using this calculator, you can verify your entitlement directly through MOHRE’s own channels:

  • The MOHRE smart app, signing in with your UAE Pass, under Employee → End of Service Calculator
  • The MOHRE contact centre for questions about your specific case
  • A formal complaint through MOHRE’s smart services portal if your employer disputes the amount

Frequently Asked Questions — Dubai

Does Dubai have different gratuity rules than the rest of the UAE?

No. Dubai mainland companies follow the same Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 formula as every other emirate. The only exception within Dubai is DIFC, which uses the DEWS savings scheme instead.

Do JAFZA and DMCC employees get standard gratuity?

Yes. JAFZA, DMCC, DDA, Dubai South, and DAFZA all follow the standard 21-day / 30-day federal formula, the same as mainland Dubai.

I work in DIFC — does this calculator apply to me?

No. DIFC replaced traditional gratuity with the DEWS scheme, a monthly employer-funded savings plan. Check your DEWS account statement for your actual balance rather than using the standard gratuity formula.

Where do I file a gratuity complaint if I work in Dubai?

Through the MOHRE smart app or website, regardless of which emirate you work in — gratuity complaints for private-sector mainland and most free zone employees are handled centrally by MOHRE.
